What is Confidence?

Confidence can be defined as ‘Having or showing the abilities’. It is when we believe completely in something to be accomplished at our own pace, and in our personal skills and abilities.

When you look at others around you, you may feel that they are better, prettier, and more intelligent than you, and you are the only one who is dull. At such times, believing your prepared presentation is crummy, and giving it up thinking your rival’s works are invincible, are the features of lack of confidence. Confidence, actually, means not only having capabilities to solve all problems and releasing insecurities but having positive mindsets, for instance, “I did prepare well and I’ll try my best,” for a task starting from a small exam to a public speech to a huge crowd of one thousand people, can still be called having confidence.

Why is it important?

People with confidence seem as though they are more outstanding and easily noticeable in crowds, particularly when they take interviews, and communicate with others in public or in the workplace. It makes leaders trustworthy as well, when they have high confidence in their projects.

Lately, self-confidence has become paramount both in the workplace and in education pathways when it comes to scholarship interviews and presentations.

Is it an innate ability?

Frankly speaking, it is not, but we can take time to have one. Every single person has not had any skills except his body since his birth. Confidence is something that you have to create. Let’s just keep on reading about how to develop confidence.

How should we behave?

The first thing would be our society. The tree is blamed if it does not bloom, and is cut if it does not fruit. All we have to do is to examine what the tree needs. Is it because of water or soil? We must create a favorable environment for it. Similarly, the environment is also crucial for you, Fountains. Even if we fail in something, we certainly need a supportive and encouraging environment that can make us motivated. In contrast, when we receive only negative impact from the environment, we tend to become under their dominance leading to further failures. One can also have self-doubts of “I can’t do this, can I?” in his head. Hence, if you are not living in a positive, motivated, or inspired atmosphere, you should better try to escape from your current place.

Secondly, we need to extend our limiting beliefs. Limiting beliefs simply means limiting yourself to learning new skills and knowledge in new fields. A mobile phone with full storage would be the best example of it. If you do not learn new things, you will not be capable of tasks new to you. Even if you are a jack of all trades, meaning not professional in every single field, you should be familiar with them or still keep in touch with the fields you have tried.

The very last method is to pay yourself a compliment. Remind yourself to be positive, and take pride in yourself every day. Build a positive self-image by writing down all the nice things you have, even if there are very few.

Nobody is perfect, and that's okay.

Be the one who is always trying to be productive and admit who you really are. In this case, consistency is the key. As the elderly often say, “A sharp knife needs regular grinding,” so push yourself every day to persist in what you are doing. In addition, we should get motivated once a week or day after day.

Well, we now believe that you know clearly what self-confidence is. Let’s build our self-confidence from the small steps mentioned above.

Next Tuesday, we are going to share one more Essential Life skill, so please do not forget to follow our page and stay tuned.
