Introduce Yourself

If somebody is about to do a presentation, most of us hesitate to introduce ourselves.

We tend to think, “Am I bragging? Am I glorifying myself?” That’s why most of us just said our name and moved onto the body. Or sometimes, we skip the entire introduction.

In fact, the introduction is really important.

Let’s take an example…..

Let’s say we want to study something about IT.

Would you ask a random pedestrian on the street? Or would you prefer asking an IT professional?

You would choose a professional, wouldn't you? We are all the same.

In another word, introducing yourself is explaining, “Why should you listen to me?” to the others.

“I’m a Biomed student, that’s why you should listen to my Biology Subject Presentation.” is a way to get more attention.

Know your audience

As you can’t perform Taylor Swift songs in front of Zaw Win Htut audience, sabbatarians from the monastery don’t want to listen to Sai Sai Kham Lam. That’s why it is really important to know your audiences’ interests and background.

If you present to doctors, it’s okay to use medical terms and subject related advanced words, but with ordinary viewers, you need to use simple terms for them to understand, don't you?

If the listeners are people from business, you need skills to connect your subject related fields to business fields to captivate their attention. Therefore, you should definitely know who your target audience is before engaging in a presentation.

Prepare to adapt to the situation

Are you sure about your topic?

If you’re going to make a presentation, you must have a strong content to present.

When you choose a topic,

You need to consider these questions,

“Who is your target audience?”

“Do I have enough information about my presentation?”

“Is this my field related subject?”

Starting with these outlines, you should decide what you are going to present only after a thorough examination.

Is it okay to give a presentation from an unfamiliar field? Yes, it’s okay! But you have to put a lot of effort into research. Or else, you want to talk about an inexperienced topic but without conscientious research, you’ll be like the saying, "Biting off more than you can chew."

So let’s move on to audience participation.

What is audience participation?

It can be claimed that the interest and adaptation of participants on presentation.

So, how do you manage to catch the audience's mind?

Ask questions frequently.

Don’t start your presentation too simply.

Always keep an eye on what's trending. Don’t lose sight of the buzzwords.

In a presentation, there is a chance that the listeners might lose interest and get sleepy if only the presenter is speaking all the time. Everybody might have faced this kind of situation, I suppose. That’s why if you draw out some questions sometimes, you will definitely get their interest since they also have to think along with the presentation.

“Hello….. My name is_____. Today, I’m presenting about blah blah blah..”

It’s too simple. Because it’s a typical introduction. You should explore a new kind of introduction and create something different.

If you can use fashionable words in your presentation, it will make a good impression on the audiences' faces, thinking, “This guy is brilliant.” That’s why even if you’re not interested in buzzing words, having knowledge of some can provide you the ability to express your perspectives from a certain point of view.

So, this is the end for today's topic. Next week, I’ll tell you about another Essential Skill as usual, so take care of yourself and please stay tuned.
